Jemma has lived in the Durham region for most of her life. She knows the community and its wonderful people and the positive and negative impacts city council has on its citizens.
She decided to run for council while working on the provincial election campaign, and talking to voters on their doorsteps about the issues that matter to them. |
Jemma studied computer science and philosophy at the University of British Columbia. Like many of her generation, she has worked in a variety of jobs including serving coffee and donuts at Tim Horton’s, pumping gas, and landscaping. Her volunteer work includes creating a three-month introductory course on video game design for children at Sunderland Library.

As a trans woman, Jemma knows what it is like to face difficult challenges and meet them head on. She appreciates the importance of strong communities in assisting us to reach our goals.

As an autistic person with disabilities, she has lived with the fact that many of our institutions leave neurodiverse and people with disabilities underemployed, underpaid, and underserved. These are trends that increasingly impact all people, regardless of their status. To get anywhere in life we often have to work twice as hard, regardless of our actual competency. Jemma understands first-hand the barriers to education, housing, and the workplace while living with disabilities. She has experienced the shortcomings of our social safety nets such as ODSP not covering the true cost of living and the burden that places on the individual and their friends and family. These systemic weaknesses have ripple effects across communities and impact us all.

“My life has taught me the importance of the support of family, friends and community. We need a regional council that is focused on making life better for all of us. Only by listening to our diverse communities will we come up with the solutions we need to tackle poverty, housing shortages and climate change. I will bring creative ideas to the table and work with all of you to find those solutions.”
